Nova
Therapy Dog · Placed
Nova is a bright star in the Paw Platoon Placement, bringing hope and healing to Manteca Fire Department. Her handler, Battalion Chief and Peer Support Director Traig Smith, has dedicated his career to the mental health and wellness of his fellow firefighters — and Nova is his most powerful tool yet.
Battalion Chief & Peer Support Director Traig Smith
Battalion Chief Traig Smith has served Manteca Fire Department for over two decades, rising through the ranks while building one of the department's most respected peer support programs. As Peer Support Director, he recognized early that traditional resources weren't reaching firefighters who needed them most. Nova changed that. Under Chief Smith's leadership, Nova has become a trusted presence at the station — helping personnel process critical incidents, reduce stress, and open up in ways they never had before. His commitment to the mental health of his crew reflects the mission of Hearts 4 Heroes USA at its core.
